The 2006 Commonwealth Lecture Australia

Future Directions for the Commonwealth

By

HE Mr Don McKinnon
Commonwealth Secretary-General

The Secretary-General will explore the history of the Commonwealth and how it has emerged into a modern and relevant global organisation of 53 equal states. He will focus on how it helps shape the international agenda, how it maintains a commitment to democracy, protection of small states, pro-poor policies and the championing of civil society. He will examine how the Commonwealth uses its established networks to influence thinking on contemporary issues. More importantly he will look at how the Commonwealth is charting a direction for the future particularly at a time when there is a need to promote mutual understanding and respect among communities and faiths, to establish stronger Commonwealth economic networks, and to overcome the inequalities caused by the ‘digital divide.’
